Scholz calls for the Ukrainian peace conference in which Russia will also participate

In an interview with the German public television ZDF, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that they agreed with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskiy that Russia should also be involved in a future peace conference aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Scholz also called for increasing efforts to resolve the conflict.

“I believe we should discuss how we can get out of this state of war faster than the current impression shows right now,” the Chancellor said.

Scholz noted that a new peace conference will definitely be held and this should be a conference in which Russia will also be present.

The results in the state elections were effective

The previous international peace conference held in Switzerland in June ended with 78 countries expressing their support for Ukraine's "territorial integrity", but the path to follow was unclear.

Scholz is facing more political content in the country for its government's support for Ukraine, including money and weapons, after parties such as AfD and BSW, which opposed the arming Kiev, succeeded against the parties in the three-party ruling coalition in the provincial elections on September 1.

"The election results also have to do with the fact that some citizens do not accept our support for Ukraine," said Scholz, whose party received less than 10% of the votes in both elections.

Some members of the Social Democratic Party also called for more weight on diplomacy against Russia.

AfD and BSW are satisfied with Scholz's statements

The Alternative for Germany (AfD), which won a state election for the first time in Thuringia on September 1 and was second in Saxony, welcomed Scholz's statement and associated it with the party's stance.

“We have been calling for peace talks covering all warring parties, including Russia, for a long time,” AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla wrote in a statement in a statement to X, arguing that it was nice that the Chancellor now followed the AfD's request.

Scholz's statements were also praised by the Sahara Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), which advocates diplomacy with Russia.

Fabio de Masi, the leader of BSW in the European Parliament, described Scholz's comments as "an important initiative on the road to a ceasefire".

Aid to Ukraine "provokes"

Meanwhile, Zelenskiy said he was grateful for the support he received at the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group meeting held in Ramstein in Germany on Friday.

The Ukrainian leader called on the participants to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to the battlefield and also asked for permission to be allowed to use these weapons to hit targets deep in Russia.

At the meeting, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that the Biden administration would announce another 250 million dollar military aid package.

While the United Kingdom said it would send a package of 650 air defense missiles, Germany promised to send 12 self-propelled howitzers.

“At the beginning of autumn, what is most important for us is to strengthen the position of Ukraine, Ukrainians, protect our cities and villages from Russian terrorism, and, of course, to provide more opportunities for our soldiers at the front,” Zelenskiy said in his video speech at night.

German media: Zelenskiy convinced in secret talks

According to the news of Bild, Zelenskiy reached an agreement on this issue at the secret talks at the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group held in Ramstein. After the summit in Switzerland, Zelenskiy called for Russia to attend the next conference.

As a matter of fact, Zelenskiy said in his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the weekend that Ukraine will prepare the peace plan in November.

“We are closer to the end of the war than we are at the beginning,” Zelenskiy said, adding that he wanted to present the plan first to US President Joe Biden and the candidates in the upcoming US presidential election.

Noting that a concrete package of defense will be a strong deterrent against Russia and will help link the war to a diplomatic outcome, the Ukrainian leader said, "This is not only about weapons, but also about important global issues."

Meloni-Zelenskiy meeting

Although he criticized Western policy, saying that depriving his country's ability to strike Russian territory at a long range was a “mistake”, he thanked Italy for supporting his decision to host the next conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine in 2025 and the “establishment of a just peace.”

Meloni also confirmed that they discussed with Zelenskiy how to ensure Ukraine's legitimate defense and work for a just peace.

The Italian leader said, "My stance on Ukraine has remained the same for two years ago. Now, as prime minister, I argue that we should not give up on Ukraine and continue to support it," he added.

Borrell criticized Meloni

But as criticized by the EU's chief diplomat Josep Borrell, who is present at Lake Como, Italy continues to oppose the lifting of the ban on attack in Russia.

While praising Meloni's comments, Borrell expressed his “disappointment” at Italy's refusal to allow Ukraine to use the weapons it provided to attack Russian bases inside Russia.

Borrell said, "I completely agree with Prime Minister Meloni, who has spoken very clearly today. But why doesn't Italy allow Ukraine to use these weapons to shoot down Russian bases inside Russia? The words are good, but it would be much better if we let Ukraine defend itself effectively. Otherwise, Russia will continue to destroy Ukraine unpunitedly, just as Israel destroyed Gaza without punishment," he said.
